Xin Heng Kee Chicken and Duck Rice Stall

As 2015 draws to a close, I will talk about one of my favourite hawker food that I practically cannot live without as my last post for year 2015.

It is none other than Chicken Rice. This time round, Lao Beng was at Pek Kio Market and Food Centre scouring for an early lunch at 11.20am.

I was immediately attracted to a snaking queue for this particular chicken and duck rice stall. Naturally, when you see Singaporeans willingly to join a queue even when the queue is already so long, their food must be fantastic.

Undaunted, I immediately joined the queue for Xin Heng Kee Chicken and Duck Rice stall (新兴记鸡鸭饭).

As I was queuing, I struck up a conversation with a middle aged uncle in front of me. I asked if the white steamed chicken was better or the roasted chicken was better. He told me he personally prefers the white steamed chicken whilst his wife prefers the roasted chicken.

From the picture above, it was quite evident that the white steamed chicken was the most popular choice of the day. The uncle was very kind and helpful and we continued our conversation with him giving me recommendations on the other good hawker food in Pek Kio Market and Food Centre.

It is always a good thing to have a conversation with others whilst queuing up as it really helps in containing one’s impatience.

When it was finally my turn, the kind, polite and motherly-looking stall auntie took my order.

The total cost for my roasted chicken rice with egg cost just $3.00 ($2.50 + $0.50). I quickly sat down and gobbled away.

The chicken was flavourful and tender to the bite, rice was very fragrant and tasted exceptionally nice with the dark soya sauce.

I showed no mercy to the delicious roasted skin (well…to my health) as I chewed and swallowed them in rapid fashion. All in all, the chicken rice tasted excellent and well worth the money paid.

Lao Beng’s Verdict

Good and tasty food is worth queuing for, this is especially so for Xin Heng Kee as their prices are affordable and delicious food cooked with their dedication and hard work.

The snaking long queue is a testament to their simple but delicious comfort food.
