“Ayam Penyet” (smashed fried chicken) is a popular Malay hawker food in Singapore. Lao Beng was at Chong Pang Market and Food Centre after a session of strenuous exercise over at Khatib Camp for my remedial training. (Training for National Service Men who did not pass their Annual IPPT – Individual Physical Proficiency Test)
I chanced upon Warong Penyet Super and to be honest it was that “Super” word that attracted me to this stall.
Initially I wanted to order the Nasi Ayam Penyet but I saw the “Nasi Goreng” (fried rice) Ayam Penyet and Dick Lee’s song started to play in my mind “Fried Rice Paradise, Nasi Goreng very nice…..”
A lover of Fried Rice in all genres, I decided to order the Nasi Goreng Ayam Penyet at $5.50. This is 50 cents more than the standard plain rice Nasi Ayam Goreng.
The Nasi Goreng was very fragrant and savoury, the fried chicken was crispy with hints of spices. The chilli packed a punch and complemented well, giving a spicy shiok taste. I managed to finish the whole plate within 5 minutes and the portion was just right for a big size man like me.
While eating and people watching, I noticed that quite a number of people order the “Ikan Penyet” (smashed fried fish) and were happily eating the big piece of fried fish. I shall try this next time.
Lao Beng’s Verdict
I would say this Ayam Penyet is not that super; but is pretty decent and is worth a try if you have cravings for Ayam Penyet and happen to be around the Chong Pang vicinity. Personally, I still like the Mat Noh and Rose ginger fried chicken rice.
PS: Alamak…I forgot to take down the stall no. , basically it is located at the last row of the food centre with majority of the hawkers selling Malay food and it is the second last stall adjacent to a drinks stall.
