It is a known fact that some hawker stalls in Singapore only operate until the end of lunchtime. Lao Beng found himself at Kebun Baru Food Centre located in Ang Mo Kio at close to 2.30pm.
Most of the stalls were already closed but I was lucky enough to find Hong Heng Beef Noodle Soup and Laksa (宏兴牛肉粉.叻沙) stall still open.
Their signboard says that their operating hours are from 7.30am – 3.30pm (closed on Mondays), so I was extremely lucky if not I would have to find another place for my belated lunch.
There are many different choices at Hong Heng Beef Noodle, you can choose brisket, tripe, tendon, beef ball or even a mixed variety. There is even an option for beef laksa!
As with all beef dishes in a hawker centre, prices are usually $4 and beyond.
I ordered a normal bowl of dry beef noodle at the price of $5.50. The standard beef soup, chilli with cincalok (fermented shrimps) and the customary lime as its companions.
The soup was beautifully infused with strong beefy flavour, tasty and not too salty.
The beef noodle serving was just right for me, the noodle and bean sprouts were awash in the lovely thick gravy and tasted smooth to the bite.
Adding the chilli with cincalok into the mix creates a delectable taste and the beef slices were chewy but tender to the bite.
Lao Beng’s Verdict
Hong Heng Beef Noodle is a pretty good choice for a bowl of delicious beef noodle, do try it if you happen to be in the vicinity.
