Traditional coffee, half-boiled eggs and kaya toast are perennial favourites of Singaporeans when it comes to having them as breakfast or even during a tea break.
Da Zhong Cafe located in Hainanese Village Food Centre serves traditional Nanyang coffee, half-boiled eggs as well as kaya toast and steamed bread.
You will usually see coffee stalls using stainless steel coffee pots but Da Zhong is still using the brass pots from yesteryear.
The pots have the brassy and bronzy look which reminded me of my childhood days in the 80s which were usually spent at coffee shops right after school.
Due to a slight cough, I ordered the steamed bread instead of the Kaya toast. The above cost $1.70 ; $1 for the steamed bread and only $0.70 for the coffee.
I attacked the coffee first, almost wanting to use the saucer to drink but I thought otherwise. The strong aroma of the coffee was inviting and the taste was married well between the bitterness of the coffee and sweetness of the condensed milk. It gave a very nostalgic taste and rolled back the years for me.
Onto the steamed bread, the moment I bite it, the butter oozes out!! It reminded me of my childhood when an electric oven was too expensive to get; my Mum would use the steamer to steam the old school bakery bread and spread SCS butter and kaya over them.
The warm steamed bread of Da Zhong was soft and fluffy, the kaya and butter fighting with each other to gain my slurp on them….oh what did I just type…
I basically gobbled up the steamed bread and licked a couple of my fingers before I wash them all down with the “wunderbar” coffee.
