There are a lot of good food in Hainanese Village Food Centre (Lorong Ah Soo), I chanced upon Blue Star Fried Hokkien Mee one late afternoon and decided to give it a try.
Prices as shown in the picture are $3.50, $4.50 and $6.00 and I ordered the smallest portion.
The portion is just right for me, with three prawns, quite a few pieces of squid and generous servings of pork lard.
I proceeded to squeeze every drop of the lime over the noodles and mixed thoroughly with the sambal belacan (shrimp paste chilli).
The key to a good plate of Fried Hokkien Mee is always the stock and Blue Star Fried Hokkien Mee was rightly moist with the tasty albeit a bit salty stock.
As I wolfed down the plate of Hokkien Mee, I noticed how flavorful it tasted with the combination of the noodles, ingredients, stock, lime and belacan. Every spoonful of the noodles almost always ensured a piece of pork lard in it making the tasting and munching process delightful…..erm….well…..I am a big pork lard fan.
Lao Beng’s Verdict
One thing is for sure, Blue Star Fried Hokkien Mee definitely tasted much better than Food Court styled Fried Hokkien Mee. With it’s superior stock, quality belacan, nice chewy ingredients making it a tasty and flavorful experience. It is definitely worth a try if you are in the vicinity and craving for Fried Hokkien Mee. Do ask for more sambal belacan if you are a belacan lover.
